There are two main types of bogs
raised bogs and blanket bogs. The names are
good descriptions of what each bog looks like.
A blanket bog covers whole
landscapes and forms in areas where the climate is
constantly wet and quite cool. This is why
blanket bogs are common in the north-west of Scotland
and in western Ireland.

A raised moss forms a dome rising
up from the surrounding landscape and the formation
of this type of bog depends more on a consistently
raised water table than climatic conditions.
Greenhead Moss is a raised bog or raised moss, but
its original domed shape is impossible to see now
because of the long history of drainage, peat cutting
and open-cast mining.
