Raised
moss distribution in Scotland © SNH
Greenhead Moss is one of several raised
bogs which formed on low plains or broad valley
floors across central Scotland. Many of these
have been lost or are gradually being destroyed by
human activity. Drainage, peat cutting and
water enriched with fertiliser that drains off
agricultural land all change the delicate water and
nutrient balance which bogs need to survive and
continue to grow.
